4 Things That God Does When We Get Out of His Way

Women are multi-taskers. That’s what we do. We fix things. We juggle things. Sometimes we think we can fix it all and juggle it all, even when, or especially when, it comes to trials in our lives. Sometimes life becomes so overwhelming that we exhaust ourselves just trying to run out and back to keep all the plates spinning. Sometimes our plans fail, because God has a better plan. Sometimes our plans fall apart, so His plans can fall into place.

In November of 2011, all my plates came crashing down. I had my third painful breast cancer surgery. My closest friend went to federal prison for stealing from me, and I was diagnosed with melanoma. All this happened within a span of 4 weeks. All of this was while I was caring for my dad through Parkinson’s, running a crazy busy business that had just been through a federal investigation, and dealing with parenting struggles. There was no fixing, no juggling, only letting go and letting God. And you know what, IT WAS OK!!

When we get out of His way, …

-We get to know Him better, because He shows us more of Who He is. My vision of God opened up just a little bit more when I trusted Him with the impossible, and I caught a glimpse of His vastness. I was deeply humbled that such a Big, Big God loved little old undeserving me that much.

-He works wonders in our lives. He answers prayer. He works His will for our lives. Sometimes He works miracles. He has healed my breast cancer (6 years cancer free). I was able to forgive my friend (And let me tell you that was all Him.) He has healed my melanoma (also 6 years cancer free). He has healed my dad of Parkinson’s last year when He took him to Heaven. He has provided a buyer a few years ago for a large part of my business to protect it from destruction by Obamacare. And He is helping me one day at a time to be the best mom I can be. I am a work in progress. A. W. Tozer once said, “While it looks like things are out of control, behind the scenes there is a God who hasn’t surrendered His authority.”

-His work in our lives grows our faith and forever changes us. The first question that crossed my mind when I learned that I had melanoma while these other things were going on was, “God, what are You doing?” I should have said, “God, I cannot wait to see how You do this!” In looking back, I see He was building my testimony. He was doing things beyond me to show me and all those close to me that bigger glimpse of Who He is, to show His glory. He was working on me, enlarging my territory on the inside and, boy, it hurt. But then again, it is not His plan to make me happy, it is to make me holy. I learned to trust Him more. When He was all I had, I found He was all I needed. A. W. Tozer also said, “The essence of surrender is getting out of God’s way so that He can do in us what He also wants to do through us.”

C. S. Lewis explains this beautifully in Mere Christianity. “Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”

-God is glorified. In our weakness, God’s strength can shine. When we get out of His way, that’s when miracles happen. When we allow ourselves to be weak, we can truly see His full strength and majesty. Sometimes, the best thing for us is the hardest for us to do–let go and let God. Perhaps only when human effort had done its best and failed would God’s power alone be free to work. —Corrie ten Boom

Never forget that God is working a plan. He is here with you. No matter how hard and how impossible it seems, He will never leave His children. His plan is good, and He is faithful. And He will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born. (Read Isaiah 66:9)

Dear Lord: Only You can turn a mess into a message, a test into a testimony, and a trial into a triumph. Only through Your plans can Your perfect will be carried out in our lives. Thank You for loving us so much that You deliver us from our trials. Please be with those reading this today who are being crushed under the weight of their burdens. If it is Your will, please lighten their loads. Show them Your glory. May we all learn to trust You more because You are faithful and You love us so much more than we could ever deserve. Amen

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. —2 Corinthians 12:9

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope that we profess, for He who promised is faithful. –Hebrews 10:23

About Sharon Hawkins

Sharon Hawkins wants others to know that she is totally in love with Jesus. Through hardships, trials and blessings, she has learned that there is no end to His mercy, His grace and His faithfulness. There’s simply no better friend than Jesus. In 2008, she answered God’s calling to begin a Ministry called Grace in The Wilderness. She loves to encourage other people, and, through the Ministry’s Newsletters and Conferences, she and others are challenging women and teens to discover Christ in a new and deeper way, who they are in Him and His plan for their lives. She has been a business owner for the last twenty years. Five years ago, she learned about forgiveness at a new level with the betrayal of a close friend who embezzled from her business and was sent to prison. Sharon has experienced God’s incredible grace through adversity during breast cancer and melanoma diagnoses and multiple surgeries that have perpetuated a continuing painful nerve illness. Both cancers were stage 1 and she has now been cancer free for four years. Her cancer journey is chronicled at www.caringbridge.org/visit/sharonhawkins. Recently, she sold a large part of her business as God has prepared her to turn a page in her life and focus more on ministry. With God’s amazing provision and the support of her wonderful friends and family—husband, Scott, and sons, Taylor and Bradley, Sharon is, not only surviving her wilderness one day at a time, but finding that His grace is more than sufficient no matter what.
