What God Knows

Have there been times when God showed Himself so clearly to you that you could not help but recognize Him and His work in your life? I have had a number of these times in my life.

One such time was about 18 years ago. My business partner at that time and I had been approached by a company who was interested in buying into our business. We prayed for a number of days that God would give us a clear sign if this was something we should not entertain. A meeting was set.

Early on the morning of the meeting, I had an overwhelming, disconcerting feeling that I should pray for my family’s safety in traveling.  My husband had already left for work. I will never forget getting on my knees with my 5-year-old son, Taylor, that morning and praying for my family, for God to be with each of us and keep us safe.

I took my son to kindergarten and headed to my meeting. About a block from the meeting, I flipped on my left turn signal at the light. Although there was a line of cars waiting to turn right, there was no oncoming traffic. With the traffic secured, I cautiously turned left. A car came flying (and I mean flying) out of the line of turning traffic and broadsided me hard in my passenger side. It knocked me completely around facing in the opposite direction in the busy intersection. I was quite shaken up, and my car was totaled, but I was not hurt.

The police came. The driver who hit me was yelling at the officer that it was my fault, that I had turned in front of him. I tried to defend myself, but there was no witness, and it was my word against his. The officer examined the scene. He measured skid marks and checked the paint on each car and the dents. The evidence supported the other driver’s story. Just as the officer was explaining that he was going to charge me for the accident, God sent help.

A young woman walked up to the officer. She told him she had seen it all. She apologized for leaving the scene, but she had to go tell her boss that she would be late because she had to come help me. She explained to the officer that the driver had been driving recklessly through several lights and had run the light just before this light. She said he sped out of line and hit me. The driver was charged.

God knew. He knew that I was going to be in that accident. He knew I would need protection, so He had me pray for it, and even got my little boy involved in praying. He knew I would need help with the officer. He sent it in the form of this sweet young lady. Later it became clear that the merger would not have been a good idea either. He had sent me my sign. I listened. He came so near to me that day that I could not help but recognize Him. He was there for me as He is for me in so many ways, on so many days. He is my Big, Big God and He knows everything.

We are in a parade through life. We only see the moment we are in, but God sees it all. The start, the middle, the journey along the way, the end. He knows the past, the present, the future, our thoughts, everyone else’s thoughts too. Nothing that happens to us is a surprise to God. Sometimes He protects us from what we thought we wanted, and He blesses us with what we did not even know we needed.

For the Christian, in the end, everything turns out all right (read Revelations). It stands to reason that if things are not all right now, it is not the end yet.  For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; He will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Revelation 7:17

Some things that happen do not make sense to us. Loved ones pass too early. Homeless children go hungry. Some people go through life with illness, with pain and suffering. Parents who want children cannot have them … Some things we will never know this side of Heaven, but … we know HIM.

We can trust God. How do I know? Because who we are when no one is looking, God still sees. He knows what we do, our darkest secrets, and He still loves us. God is never blind to our tears, deaf to our prayers, or silent to our pain. He answers every prayer—with “Yes,” with “No,” or with “Wait.” Because “…we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

“God knows. God sees. God cares. He’s there.” —Tony Evans

Dear Lord: Some things we will never know or understand on this earth, but You do. We don’t know what the future holds, but we know that You hold the future. You made the stars. You know our names. You know our hearts. You know us. And You love us anyway. Help us to stop trying to figure out everything and let You be God. Amen

“Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know it all.” Psalm 139:4

“For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.” Job 28:24

Sharon has experienced God’s incredible grace through adversity during breast cancer and melanoma diagnoses and multiple surgeries that have perpetuated a continuing painful nerve illness. Both cancers were stage 1 and she has now been cancer free for four years. Her cancer journey is chronicled at www.caringbridge.org/visit/sharonhawkins. Recently, she sold a large part of her business as God has prepared her to turn a page in her life and focus more on ministry. With God’s amazing provision and the support of her wonderful friends and family—husband, Scott, and sons, Taylor and Bradley, Sharon is, not only surviving her wilderness one day at a time, but finding that His grace is more than sufficient no matter what.

What God Knows — 2 Comments

  1. Just, finally, got to sit and read and soak in and enjoy this week’s Blog. Thank you for the reminder that God is always out in front of us … knowing exactly what is about to happen or will happen. What a great reminder that when things do happen that our FIRST response is to TRUST in God and not panic. This message comes to me a few hours after I completely missed the opportunity to exercise my FAITH and panic instead. NOT only did it waste a lot of time and energy, but my choice to panic was in complete defiance to trusting God. Thank you, God, for forgiving me of this test. Thanks, Sharon.
