How to Get Through What You’re Going Through

Have you ever been to the end of your rope? Maybe you are there right now, and you feel that you are dangling with no net to catch you, trying desperately just to hang on to that last little thread of hope.

I have been to that place. Through the years, God has brought me through so much—two kinds of cancer, surgeries and on-going health issues (specifically my chronic nerve pain illness), caring for my parents through terminal illnesses until their deaths, mourning their loss, the sale and painful transition of my business, the theft by my close friend from my business. The list goes on and on.

I am not saying my list compares to yours. We all have our own crosses to bear. There are much worse things that people I personally know have gone through than what I have experienced. But, some of things I have been through were unbearable to me. Unbearable—that is in my own strength.

Every single time, without exception, when hard times have come, I have questioned the Lord. “Why this?” “Why now?” “Why me?” After many times of dangling by that thread, I have come to learn the one simple truth He has been trying to teach me for years.

When I question Him, The Holy Spirit always whispers the same answer, “T-R-U-S-T  M-E.”

“Trust me, when your health is uncertain.” “I am the Great Physician …” (Luke 8:43-48)

“Trust me, when your loved ones are dying and when they leave this earth.” “I have prepared a place for my children and there where I am they may be also …” (John 14:2-3) and “I am close to the broken hearted, and I save those who are crushed in spirit …” (Psalm 43:18)

“Trust me, when your livelihood is being threatened.” “I feed the sparrow. Why don’t you think I will feed you? …” (Matthew 10:29)

“Trust me, when your closest friend turns their back on you.” “I am a Friend that sticks closer than a brother …” (Proverbs 18:24)

“Trust me, when your child turns their back on me.” “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

“Trust me, when your life seems impossible.” “What’s too hard for me? Nothing is impossible for me …” (Luke 1:37)

“Trust me, when your life is over.” “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25)

When you reach the end of the rope and that last thread is sliding through your fingers as you are about to slip into uncertainty, hopelessness, and desperation, just keep reaching. Try just one more time. What you will find is truly remarkable, substantial and miraculous.

It is the hem of His garment.

Matthew 9:20-22 says, “Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.”

What healing do you need for Jesus to bring to your life today? Will you just trust Him with it?

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23

If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, I invite you to accept Him today, repent of your sins and rest in the arms of the Master who can and will carry you through anything. He can and He will comfort you with a peace that passes all understanding in the journey.

Dear Lord: Thank You for Your great love and faithfulness for us, and that You have plans to give each of us a hope and a future through Your Son Jesus Christ. Please guide us in Your paths, and help us to trust You no matter what. Sometimes we make it so much harder than it has to be when all we really need to do is trust You. Amen

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.  Psalm 139:7-10

About Sharon Hawkins

Sharon Hawkins wants others to know that she is totally in love with Jesus. Through hardships, trials and blessings, she has learned that there is no end to His mercy, His grace and His faithfulness. There’s simply no better friend than Jesus. In 2008, she answered God’s calling to begin a Ministry called Grace in The Wilderness. She loves to encourage other people, and, through the Ministry’s Newsletters and Conferences, she and others are challenging women and teens to discover Christ in a new and deeper way, who they are in Him and His plan for their lives. She has been a business owner for the last twenty years. Five years ago, she learned about forgiveness at a new level with the betrayal of a close friend who embezzled from her business and was sent to prison. Sharon has experienced God’s incredible grace through adversity during breast cancer and melanoma diagnoses and multiple surgeries that have perpetuated a continuing painful nerve illness. Both cancers were stage 1 and she has now been cancer free for four years. Her cancer journey is chronicled at www.caringbridge.org/visit/sharonhawkins. Recently, she sold a large part of her business as God has prepared her to turn a page in her life and focus more on ministry. With God’s amazing provision and the support of her wonderful friends and family—husband, Scott, and sons, Taylor and Bradley, Sharon is, not only surviving her wilderness one day at a time, but finding that His grace is more than sufficient no matter what.
