How to Have Hope Through the Election and Beyond

flagAm I the only one these days during the election whose heart drops every time a program is interrupted by “Breaking News”? How much more news can we take when it is all bad? When much of it is unbelievable? When we cannot trust what the news media says anymore?

Am I the only one wondering, “How did we get this far from where we used to be in America? From where we should be?

Love or hate Donald Trump, one thing for sure that you can say about him is that he has really shaken up things with this Presidential Race. He has called attention to corruption in the media, in Washington, in our nation, and in the lives of both of our Presidential Candidates.

The America that we are handing off to our children is not the same America that our parents handed off to us. It is heartbreaking.  Our United States are anything but united these days. Where did things go wrong?

No matter how it is now painted, America is a nation originally founded on godly principles by forefathers who fought for religious freedom. One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. The reason we are so divided now is because we no longer are a nation standing on the principles of God.

There is no question that what we need in our nation today is a revival beginning with the children of God. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)  If there has ever been a time that we have needed healing in our land, it is now.

Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Good men let Roe vs. Wade become law. Good men allowed prayer to be taken out of school. Good men have allowed corrupt people to rise to power. We have been paying for our apathy all the way back to the Garden of Eden. In the prophetic words of Charles E. Weller, writer of an ancient typewriting manual, “”Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.” It is way past time for Christians to stand up and be counted in our nation. We are about to get one more chance. Maybe our last.

We can have hope in the Lord through the election and beyond. Here’s how:

  1. Vote. Not voting is not the answer. Voting is an opportunity to protect, promote and preserve godly government. Passing up that opportunity means letting those who would denigrate the name of Christ have their way in our lives and in our nation. The leaders we elect, or do nothing to remove, have great influence on our freedoms to worship and spread the gospel. They can protect those rights or restrict them. They can lead our nation toward moral disaster or toward righteousness either directly or indirectly, including through Supreme Court Justice appointments for a generation.
  2. Know. Know the issues. Know the platform positions. Check the candidates’ stances on pivotal moral issues, and vote for those who best reflect Biblical values. Christian Coalition has been providing Voter Guides through many elections through the years. This year’s Presidential guide is at http://www.cc.org/sites/default/files/3/2016VGPresident.pdf
  3. Study. Study God’s Word and the realities of the choices on the ballot. Seek His wisdom. Listen for His voice.
  4. Pray. First and foremost, pray for God’s will. Pray for revival in our country and for His forgiveness and mercy. Pray for the candidates and for our government. Pray for God’s direction on how we should vote. Pray for God to shed light on the candidates, to help all of America to see His truth.
  5. Trust. God is not limited by incompetent leaders. He is sovereign and can and will work His good and perfect will despite who is elected. The bible is filled with examples of men who were far less than perfect but who were used mightily to fulfill His purposes. David was an adulterer and a murderer. Moses was a murderer. Peter was impulsive, acted without thinking, and assaulted a soldier. Samson gave into lust. Still He used them to accomplish His purposes.

Most importantly, remember that when we wake up on November 9, no matter what happens, Jesus will still be the King of King and Lord of Lords.

Dear Lord: We pray for our nation. We need Your help, Father. Please work in the hearts of all Americans to bring revival and repentance, to make us once again a great Christian nation. Help us as Your children to take a stand for You during this election season and beyond. It becomes clearer every day that our days are growing shorter before Christ’s return. May this be a time of awakening and revival for Your children and for our nation. Thank You that You are sovereign through it all. Amen

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people (Proverbs 14:34)

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”  (Daniel 2:20-21)

About Sharon Hawkins

Sharon Hawkins wants others to know that she is totally in love with Jesus. Through hardships, trials and blessings, she has learned that there is no end to His mercy, His grace and His faithfulness. There’s simply no better friend than Jesus. In 2008, she answered God’s calling to begin a Ministry called Grace in The Wilderness. She loves to encourage other people, and, through the Ministry’s Newsletters and Conferences, she and others are challenging women and teens to discover Christ in a new and deeper way, who they are in Him and His plan for their lives. She has been a business owner for the last twenty years. Five years ago, she learned about forgiveness at a new level with the betrayal of a close friend who embezzled from her business and was sent to prison. Sharon has experienced God’s incredible grace through adversity during breast cancer and melanoma diagnoses and multiple surgeries that have perpetuated a continuing painful nerve illness. Both cancers were stage 1 and she has now been cancer free for four years. Her cancer journey is chronicled at www.caringbridge.org/visit/sharonhawkins. Recently, she sold a large part of her business as God has prepared her to turn a page in her life and focus more on ministry. With God’s amazing provision and the support of her wonderful friends and family—husband, Scott, and sons, Taylor and Bradley, Sharon is, not only surviving her wilderness one day at a time, but finding that His grace is more than sufficient no matter what.

How to Have Hope Through the Election and Beyond — 5 Comments

  1. Amen, my Sister. You are NOT alone. I cannot imagine any Christian not struggling over this election cycle. You are right .. WE (God’s people) let this country get to where it is now by NOT caring, not participating, and NOT paying attention. To NOT vote is like drinking poison hoping the other person (party) will die. VOTE — we are blessed to (still) have that right. PRAY — God is the sole-determinator of all things. GIVE THANKS — to our sovereign God who is and will forever be!
